Tyldesley Library

Complete Roofing Systems were selected to carry out the re-roofing work for Tyldesley Library, a Grade II listed building undergoing an extensive restoration. This project was significant as it involves preserving the historic features of the library, with the roof playing a crucial role in protecting the building and maintaining its traditional aesthetic. To meet these needs, we used Redland Rosemary Clay Classic plain tiles in red—a product with a long history of use on heritage properties.

Restoring a heritage landmark

Upon inspection, it was clear that the library’s roof, after more than 110 years, required a complete replacement. Over the years, various repairs had been made, with some areas re-roofed using concrete tiles that detracted from the building’s original appearance. Given the building’s Grade II listed status, it was essential that our roofing materials met specific aesthetic and performance requirements.

We chose Redland Rosemary tiles because of their historical significance and reliable performance. These clay plain tiles have become synonymous with traditional British roofing, offering a look that aligns well with the architectural style of Tyldesley Library. Additionally, their modern performance capabilities ensure that they provide long-term protection while preserving the building’s historical integrity. The tiles were also suitable for the steep 65-degree pitch of the roof, maintaining the traditional appearance while meeting current standards.

How we installed the roof

To carry out the re-roofing, we first erected full scaffolding around the building, ensuring safe access to the roof. To further enhance safety and efficiency, we used a Bocker hoist to transport the tiles to the roof. This method not only made the site safer but also improved the installation process, allowing us to complete the roofing within four months, despite the challenges posed by the steep pitch.

Our team of nine skilled roofers worked carefully to ensure that the new roof met the strict standards required for a listed building while restoring the library’s traditional aesthetic. The combination of durable rosemary tiles and our expert installation means that Tyldesley Library can now expect its roof to last another century, just as its original counterpart did.

Overcoming challenges

During the project, the library was closed to the public, which allowed straightforward access to the site. However, due to the extensive refurbishment, we had to coordinate closely with other trades on-site to minimise disruption. Our experience enabled us to work seamlessly alongside other teams, ensuring that the roofing phase was completed within the planned four-month timeframe. With the roof secure, internal works could continue, knowing that the building was well-protected from the elements.

Delivering on time and on budget

We completed the re-roofing project on time and within budget. The success of our work was reflected when we were awarded a second project on the same building, showing that the client was satisfied with the quality and efficiency of our work.

Preserving the past, protecting the future

Tyldesley Library, built in 1909, is a local heritage landmark known for its Jacobean Renaissance architecture. After fears of its potential demolition, the community rallied to save the building, leading to its Grade II listing in 2023 and the subsequent £1.5 million refurbishment project. A key part of this restoration was bringing the library’s red clay roof back to life, a defining feature of its architectural significance.

By choosing BMI Redland Rosemary Clay Classic tiles, we have helped to rejuvenate the building’s roof, ensuring it reflects its original aesthetic while providing robust protection against the elements. This project is a good example of how CRS can blend modern performance with traditional design, helping to preserve the building for future generations to enjoy.
