Workmanship

Firstly, our team installed acoustic insulation to the large singular space to reduce echo. We worked closely with the architect and expert advisers to ensure the insulation worked with the roofing system and was fitted to the correct specification. As the space is used for learning, good acoustics are paramount to providing the best educational environment.

As the building was constructed using a glulam portal frame, our operatives had to take special care when installing the Euroclad roofing system, ensuring we didn’t cause any structural or aesthetic damage as the frame is internally exposed.

We also had to build around the natural ventilation system, an automated system powered by solar panels. Natural ventilation systems are becoming more popular due to cost, functionality and sustainability.

We completed the roof by installing perimeter aluminum flashings.

As well as the main roof, we installed IKO Armourplan, a polyester-reinforced, mechanically fixed PVC membrane, to two lower flat roofs. The system has a guarantee, which will protect the roofs for 20 years.

Project challenges

In addition to the demands of working with a glulam frame, we dealt with several logistical challenges. Smaller machines were required to access narrower elevations and, due to carrying out the work in winter, the metal roof was often slippery, so our operatives had to be very cautious and only work on the roof when conditions allowed.

As the location of the site is in a controlled airspace area close to Manchester Airport, air traffic control informed lower flights to avoid the area while cranes were erected.

A centre for upskilling

The project created a fit for purpose central training facility for Timpson and its staff, now called ‘The Nest’. The building offers a large, open space for training sessions, conferences, lectures, team building, networking and product launches. Smaller, more intimate rooms are also available, as well as breakout facilities – all under an attractive, ceiling aesthetic.
