Digital Innovation Facility

The flagship building of Liverpool’s Knowledge Quarter, the Digital Innovation Facility provides a new home for world-leading research in computer science, robotics, engineering and emerging technologies. Part of the University of Liverpool, the £12.7 million facility is forecast to create approximately 400 jobs and boost the city region’s economy by over £44.5 million over a ten-year period.

Complete Roofing Systems was awarded the contract to deliver the main flat roof, as well as a smaller flat roof and aluminium cladding.

Workmanship

The architects specified Parabit Duo for the 5,400 sq ft concrete structural deck roof because it is robust, but also cost effective and quick to install. This meant we were able to waterproof the building in minimum time, allowing other trades to continue their work and deliver the building to schedule.

After applying the hot melt in three stages, we finished the roof with stone-washed ballast and paving, creating a roof terrace for faculty, students and visitors to use and enjoy the stunning 360° view of the city.

Project complexity

Our site team overcame several challenges to deliver the project successfully.

Situated in the centre of Liverpool, there was little space for storage of materials or delivery vehicles to maneuvre. We employed meticulous logistical and traffic management to ensure our suppliers were able to access the site and deliver materials to schedule.

Collaboration between suppliers was paramount as there were dozens of different trades working on site at any given time, meaning space was extremely restricted. Our site team worked closely with the other suppliers to align the programme of work and ensure each element was carried out at the right time, enabling everyone to deliver their part of the programme in the most efficient way.

With the work taking place during the UK’s official departure from the EU, we also had to contend with supply issues. Most notably, the Interpon Sable bronze powder to coat the aluminium mesh was imported exclusively from Italy and was subject to several delays. Careful planning and management were required to ensure there was enough lead time for the mesh to be coated with the powder before it was transported to site. This was exacerbated by the fact that the tower crane in the centre of the building was due to be dismantled mid-project, so we had to ensure all our materials were loaded onto the roof on time.

Protecting the students of the future

This was a complex project, but the results are rewarding. The Digital Innovation Facility is future proofed with a high-performance, extremely durable roofing system that is guaranteed for 20 years. A new feature on Liverpool’s skyline, the building’s rainscreen cladding is striking, complementing the Victorian architecture of its neighbours in colour, while showcasing the modernity that the facility embodies.
