Grappenhall Heys Primary School

As Grappenhall Heys Primary School’s existing roof had reached its end of life, Complete Roofing Systems was engaged to install a new slated roof with 30 roof lights.

Workmanship

Our team stripped the existing roof covering before installing a new vapour control layer, insulation in between and above the rafters, and timber battens and a breathable membrane in accordance with British Standard 5534:2014 (plus amendments). We then fitted the roof with Richmond 10 Slates and incorporated the electric powered roof lights, appointing a local subcontractor to connect them to the mains.

We fully briefed the school and worked with Xtratherm, the insulation manufacturer, to calculate the thickness of the insulation needed to meet the requirements of Part L (Conservation of Fuel and Power) of the Building Regulations, which sets out the energy efficiency and thermal requirements of a building based on its area.

Health and safety

As with all our work, health and safety was paramount, but managing risk on this project took exceptional planning and preparation due to the school being operational throughout.

The site was fully segregated and secure, and its boundary was altered regularly as the works progressed to enable our operatives to deliver the install in sections. We created temporary roads away from the school gates and operational entrances to maintain an appropriate, safe distance from the pupils, teachers and visitors.

Collaboration was essential in safely managing the project. We worked closely with our scaffolding contractor to phase the works, resulting in minimal noise and disruption, and to maintain convenient, safe access throughout the works. This included installing an internal birdcage in phases to keep our operatives safe when fitting the roof lights.

Our site manager also ensured deliveries were restricted to off-peak hours and conducted daily meetings with the headteacher to keep her informed of the programme and its progress, reducing disruption to the school.
