Aldi Lancaster

As part of Aldi’s rapid growth across the UK, Complete Roofing Systems provided an envelope solution (roof and walls) for an attractive new Aldi supermarket based in Lancaster, comprising of 1,254 sq m of retail space.

Due to its location, close to Lancaster Castle and the River Lune, the store was designed to deliver an engaging, modern aesthetic that complements and blends into its natural surroundings. As we were engaged and involved before planning, we were able to support our client in ensuring this objective was met.

Creating a unique aesthetic

Planning was initially refused by Lancaster City Council on the basis that the original design of the timber cladding was too uniform. Helping Aldi find a quick solution, we employed our design expertise to create a random pattern, which met the planning criteria and delivered the desired outcomes. The result is a modern aesthetic that typifies Aldi’s assets across the country.

Before installation, we used Sentrin FRX fire retardant treatment on the timber to adhere to the highest safety standards, while also providing longevity of materials. The treatment is designed to last for the life of the building with no maintenance required. During installation, we used a concealed finish technique which, while more time consuming and challenging, provides a cleaner look and feel. This involves drilling holes for fixing, then plugging them with the same timber – 12,000 plugs were used in total.

Project challanges

Our site team overcame several challenges to complete the project successfully. First and foremost, residential buildings were situated at the boundaries of the site. To minimise disruption for the residents, we implemented several measures, including amending working hours and staggering deliveries. We worked closely with the main contractor to ensure we communicated regularly with residents regarding the works.

Our site manager also successfully dealt with supply chain challenges to deliver a project that met the original programme agreed with the client. The flame retardant treatment of the timber cladding typically has long lead times, so this had to be meticulously planned into the programme of works.

End to end support

Although one of over 200 stores we’ve delivered for Aldi across the UK, this project demonstrates our ability to support clients with additional needs to ensure their builds and refurbs go to plan and they meet their business objectives.
