Somerford Booths Hall

Somerford Booths Hall, a Grade II listed building, required an extensive roofing restoration to balance historical preservation with modern standards. Our primary goal was to maintain the building’s aesthetic and ensure its integrity for many years to come.

We utilised a variety of high-quality materials specifically selected for the project. The main materials included reclaimed Welsh slate, IKO single ply, IKO insulation and 1F membrane from Burton Roofing. Reclaimed Welsh slate was selected for its historical accuracy and durability, ideal for preserving the building’s aesthetic while providing a robust roofing solution. IKO Single Ply was chosen for the flat roof sections due to its renowned quality and the assurance provided by its 10-year insurance-backed guarantee. IKO Insulation contributed significantly to the energy efficiency of the entire roofing system. Additionally, the 1F Membrane met bat conservation requirements, highlighting the project’s commitment to environmental sustainability and compliance.

Installation process

We covered the sloped roof sections with reclaimed Welsh slate, securing each slate with copper nails to enhance durability and maintain historical accuracy. For the flat roof areas, we expertly installed IKO Single Ply and integrated it with lead gutters to ensure efficient drainage. Special attention was given to the bullnose detail where single ply, lead, and slate converged, ensuring a seamless and durable finish. Beneath the roofing materials, we installed IKO Insulation to improve energy efficiency, contributing to a more sustainable and cost-effective building. Through this combination of carefully selected materials and precise installation techniques, we achieved a balance of historical preservation aligned to modern standards.

Soft ground to rehoming bats

Access to the site was restricted due to soft ground conditions and ongoing landscaping. We utilised a hoist at the front of the property to transport materials since rear access was limited. The presence of bats required us to coordinate with a specialist to safely relocate them to nearby roosts, involving detailed planning to prevent delays. We carefully planned deliveries and material movements to manage these challenges. Night sealing was performed to maintain a watertight environment during the refurbishment, protecting the interior from water damage.

A historical home for the future

The project spanned approximately eight weeks and we met all critical milestones. PH Property Holdings were thrilled with our expertise in navigating heritage requirements and bat conservation efforts. The overall restoration was closely monitored by local planners and English Heritage due to the Grade II listed status of Somerford Booths Hall. We balanced modern roofing techniques with historical preservation, ensuring the building’s legacy for future generations.
