Elworth CE Primary School

Over the last few years, Elworth CE Primary School’s roll number has been steadily increasing and is expected to grow further as the school is situated in an expanding residential area. To keep up with the number of houses being built in the area, the school decided to build a classroom extension.

Complete Roofing Systems was engaged to install a metal secret fix roof to the extension building.

System

A Euroclad SF500 pitched seamed roof system in jet black was specified due to its durability and clean finish. The roof incorporates two electric Velux windows, allowing natural light to flow into the classrooms, as well as four wind catchers for natural ventilation.

Workmanship

While the SF500 roof system is designed for a fast, simple installation, fitting the wind catchers required highly skilled workmanship. Our team formed a structural opening in the roof and welded aluminium soakers to create an upstand for the wind catchers to sit in, then sealed them from the roof side.

We also installed membrane coated metal gutters and pressed metal profile fascia and soffits, which increase the lifespan of the roof, while enhancing the architectural features of the building.

Project complexity

Most of the work took place in February, making the project particularly challenging due to heavy snowfall and ice. We installed a temporary walkway on the roof to enable our team to work safely in the extreme weather conditions. Our operatives also took extra care to ensure the inside of the roof was protected and sealed from the snow before fitting the bottom layer of roof sheets to deliver a watertight covering.

Educating the community

Despite the challenges, the project was delivered on time and within budget. The extension is now home to four new classrooms, a central teaching resource area, group room, nurture room and withdrawal room, as well as toilets for staff and pupils. Increasing the school’s capacity from 315 to 420 pupils, the extension will serve the community for generations to come.
