Interview with Joe Potts: An Apprenticeship in Roofing with CRS

Leading roofing solution manufacturer, BMI, recently interviewed Joe Potts of CRS ahead of this year’s Apprentice of the Year competition. Joe talks about his experience of the two-day competition, his apprenticeship with CRS and where his career is today, having successfully graduated from the apprenticeship programme

BMI Apprentice of the Year

The BMI Apprentice of the Year competition provides a platform for roofing apprentices by showcasing their skills and learning from industry professionals, before putting their abilities to the test before a judging panel. Joe won the Highly Commended award in 2023. He said, “I really enjoyed taking part in BMI Apprentice of the Year 2023. One of the standout moments for me was meeting a lot of the experts from high up in our industry.”

BMI states that the award recognised Joe for “the level of skill he had demonstrated throughout each task and the enthusiasm he had shown for the sector.”

A career in roofing

Joe started his apprenticeship with CRS by shadowing the team on site, while learning the theory at college. Joe tells BMI, “Whenever I was on a job, I had consistent support from the [CRS] team and always found it beneficial to be shown the way by somebody more experienced.”

Joe completed his apprenticeship in 2023 and continues to work at CRS, applying the skills he learned during his apprenticeship to a variety of projects. BMI highlights, “Joe has continued to push his development by taking on manufacturer-approved courses, elevating his own capability and that of his team.”
