As part of Aldi’s ongoing expansion across the UK, Complete Roofing Systems headed to South Wales to deliver a unique project for the retailer at their new 2,045 sq m store in Porthcawl.

Marking the first development in Porthcawl’s Waterfront Regeneration Area, both the local council and project architect were keen to pay tribute to the town’s coastal location, maritime heritage and bright future in the store’s design. As well as using sustainable materials, such as locally sourced limestone and wood in the build, they also wanted to make sure the store offered a real focal point for the town – through a wave shaped roof.

With multiple curves, this intricate standing seam design meant our site team was faced with its biggest challenge yet and, through working closely with long term collaborators Arc Bauen, Ash & Lacy and Owen Associates, we created a well-planned and layered approached that saw not only the roof itself be successfully curved, but also the building’s canopy, facias and soffits adapted to suit the unique but eye-catching design.

Although the curved roof came with its challenges, we also had to deal with the store’s coastal location and contributing elements. The area’s high wind speeds combined with the sheer length of the metal roofing panels meant the team could only work on select days due to safety regulations, but we were still able to complete the project successfully and on time.

Never ones to shy away from a unique request, we have shown that we can advise, collaborate and deliver on even the most complex of projects with our usual efficiency, quality and professionalism.

This project takes our collaboration with Aldi to well over 200 stores and, on this occasion, has created 45 new jobs for local people.
