Lomeshaye Junior School

Following the relocation of the infant and nursery school next door, Lomeshaye Junior School expanded its facilities into the old building. Forming one large building, a new structure was erected to link the existing schools.

Complete Roofing Systems was appointed to build and slate the pitched roof on the new building, ensuring it seamlessly integrated with the existing roofs.

Workmanship

Working in accordance with British Standard 5534:2014 (plus amendments), we used graded, sorted and stamped BS5534 battens, Ballytherm Polyisocyanurate insulation to ensure the appropriate U value was met and a high-quality breathable membrane to ensure the roof was waterproofed in every eventuality. Our operatives then laid the Spanish slates, which were specified to complement the existing slated roofs.

Similar to installing roof lights on a pitched roof, fitting the two wind catchers required highly skilled workmanship. We built timber upstands for the wind catchers to sit in, then battened and sealed them from the roof side using leadwork.

Another complex element of the project was integrating the new roof with the existing coverings on the original school buildings. We collaborated with a subcontractor that stripped the necessary slates from the existing roofs and installed timber trusses, allowing our team to form new valleys and slate the existing roof into the new.

We finished the roof with a dry ridge and verge system, a durable, weathertight solution, which is also aesthetically pleasing.

Enabling continuity of learning

As the school was in operation throughout the project, the pupils, teachers and visitors’ safety was our utmost priority. The site was fully segregated, locked and secure, enabling safe access to the school at all times and we worked closely with our suppliers to ensure all deliveries arrived outside of pick up and drop off times.

Our site manager conducted regular on-site meetings with the school’s management team to ensure it was aware of the programme and days where there would be noise, minimising disruption to the children’s learning.

Educating more local children

The extended school is now home to a new activity hall, entrance foyer, staff room and dedicated rooms for group work, providing an improved learning environment.

With the local population growing, Lomeshaye Junior School has been able to increase its roll number, meaning the building will be enjoyed by many more pupils and the local community for years to come.

We can install roof slating on new build, heritage or industrial buildings – find out more.
